On April 16th, a Tsugaru Shamisen player Koji Yamaguchi performed in collaboration with Yoshihiko Fueki, a Taiko player at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC).

It was the second time to perform in Toronto for Koji. On the other hand, Yoshihiko showed his performance here for the first time. Needless to say, it was their first collaboration concert in Toronto.

The hall was full with audience that was mainly Japanese Canadians.
They performed Tsugaru Jongarabushi which was a Japanese folk song and Koji’s original song Silk Hat as welcome performances. Audience was immediately drawn into powerful but delicate sounds made by Tsugaru Shamisen and Taiko.

They performed one song to another such as folk songs and children’s songs, also, they played a solo on each instrument. Applause for their amazing performance sounded never-ending.

Then Yamaguchi said, “Next, we’ll do a song from an American band I really like” and they started playing a masterpiece of a rock band Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit and people swayed to the music. They showed versatility of traditional instruments by performing that song.

They reached the climax of the concert. After the last song Tsugaru Jongarabushi Part 2, they received a standing ovation. They performed Soran Bushi, which was played twice at the concert, at the request of an encore. Audience called out, “Hai, Hai” to it.

Finally, the concert closed in an ever-lasting standing ovation.

Even for the people who saw Koji’s previous concert, they must have had a fresh impression. Also, they realized how amazing collaborated sounds made by Tsugaru Shamisen and Taiko were.
People who saw their performance for the first time must have noticed the excellence of Japanese traditional instruments: Tsugaru Shamisen and Taiko.

すると山口さんが「次の曲は僕の大好きな海外のバンドの曲をやります!」と言い、ロックバンドNirvana(ニルヴァーナ)の代表曲の1つ「Smells Like Teen Spirit(スメルズ・ライク・ティーン・スピリット)」を披露、この曲で伝統楽器の幅の広さを証明してくれた。
