Love Music, Love Each Other 1. Canadian Music Week
● What is CMW?
Canadian Music Week (CMW) is the entertainment event in North America focusing
on the business of music. It includes the others like conference, exhibition, award shows, film festival, comedy festival and much more. CMW is the biggest new music festival in Canada that runs for 10 days, with 1,000 showcasing bands at more than 60 live music venues in downtown Toronto this year. In 2015, they reached their 33rd year.
● How to join
You can buy wristbands which gives you access to 10 days of Music, Comedy and
Film festivals. There are 2 types. General wristband is $75. VIP wristband is $150. If you buy the latter, it includes instant access to the above festivals and guaranteed access to some awards, and interviews.
If you don’t want to buy a wristband, you can still buy specific tickets (the price depends on the event.) and you can attend free showcases as well.
The box office is located in Sheraton Centre.
General wristband and guide book.
2. My experience in CMW: Pickup Hot Events!
For me, as an ESL students in Toronto, it is too difficult to go to any conference or summit, so I joined these 10 days as one of the “musiclovers” and wrote this report from the perspective of “musiclover.” So from now on, I will introduce my best 3 events in the whole
● MAY 5, JBE & The OMG presents THIS IS FOR MY CITY Jully Black
“How powerful she was!!!” This was the first words which came up with in my mind after her concert. This was the first time to listen to her music, but Jully Black is a wellknown R&B singer in Canada. She is a double platinum recording artist and one of “The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever,” by CBC Music.
During her concert, I was suddenly moved by her message. She called over us “we are powerful, we are wonderful, we are free” (I hope my listening is correct.) I don’t know why they have still been in my ears but I can understand how the words have a big effect on me. I think her strong, straight voice reached everyone in the Phoenix Concert Theatre and made the atmosphere peaceful. In my opinion, she looks like a reflection of woman in the 21th century.

MAY 8, CHUM FM presents FAN FEST 2015. featuring performances by MAGIC!, KIESZA, COLBIE CAILLAT, LIGHTS, TREVOR GUTHRIE, SHAWN HOOK and FRANCESCO YATES
Until I went to FAN FEST, I thought this event is marvelous for those people who are crazy about those artists, but I was wrong. Even if you are not familiar with any artist, I think you can still enjoy it. I already felt like that. I’m not good with the latest music trend, but the huge stage, many spotlights, big screens, and so on got me excited. Especially the movie work was very nice. Also, the venue was at the Grand Ballroom inside Sheraton Centre and it was the biggest space compared to those I had been to for others during CMW. We were able to enjoy some luxury time. If I can point out another thing, I’ll say that I could understand how these artists love Canada and Toronto. It made me warm and thought Toronto is a good place.
This FAN FEST is held every year, so if you decide to attend CMW next year or in the future, I recommend you to go there!
MAY 9, FLOOD MAGAZINE presents – JOEY BADA$$ with special guests
I arrived at the Danforth Music Hall around 7:30 PM. The opening time was 7:00PM so I thought I was late, but there were still a lot of people in front of the hall that had formed a long line. I found out later it was because this was an all age event.
Before JOEY’s performance, we enjoyed HARE SQUEAD, KAYDEE, and JAZZ CARTIER. The most impressed artist is JAZZ CARTIER. He is the same age as me, but I was surprised not only by his emotional rapping but also by his professionalism. He used the big screen and projected movies while he was performing. I thought it was an efficient way to express his songs and feeling.
Finally, JOEY came to the stage and then everyone gathered to the front and screamed highpitched voices, at the same time the temperature inside hall seemed to get hotter. The heavy beats and base sounds which was played by Dj Statik Selektah and JOEY’s voice mixed in a good way, and another special guest came to this concert(sorry I don’t know his name) and rapped together. Actually 2 years ago, he lost one of the members of Pro Era, Capital STEEZ by suicide, so in this concert he prayed for him. For me it was a memorable moment when everyone in the hall raised their own peace in the air.
Anyway his raps which takes you back to the 90’s are just sick…!!! These days he announced his first annual “STEEZ DAY” festival and in Japan he is lined up in FUJIROCK 2015. Check it out!

3. Conclusion: Why I recommend this event
I was surprised when I asked my friends at school about CMW and almost all of them didn’t know about it at all. I’d like more people to know this fabulous event. It is because I think this event is a very useful for creating opportunities to meet with new music. There are more than 1,000 showcases and every day during this period you can find some showcases in the downtown area. If you buy one general wristband, you can go to most showcases in 10 days! And also if you have a wristband and you go to one showcase but you don’t like it, you can change the place easily. (In my opinion, this system is really nice for people who don’t have much money like me.) Of course, it is difficult to fit your own favorite music in only 10 days, but I think if you don’t go listening, you won’t find anything. If you join CMW, it will give you something new and also a memorable experience.
Moreover, there is another reason. In honesty, I saw the background of the music. For example, in most concerts of hip hop, there were many black people. On the other hand, in the concert of rock or folk, there were many white people. I wouldn’t like you to be way off base with this situation because I found a lot of kind races at each venue. Everywhere you go to listen to music at the CMW is for all musiclovers. I felt there was no racial border when we enjoy music. Also, I think it might have been the nature of Toronto which is a cultural mosaic city. Throughout the week, CMW reminded me of the power of music.
Finally, under the music we can share, enjoy, and love each other!
